Visit Sable Island

Visit one of the most captivating, isolated, unspoiled places on earth. Sable Island is famed for the wild horses that live there — a herd of about 500 descended from animals introduced to the island in the 1700s. The island was established as a national park preserve in 2013, giving the public access on a limited basis.

Sable Island is the only emergent part of the outer continental shelf, emerging from the North Atlantic as a beautiful sand dune that houses wild horses and the largest breeding colony of grey seals in the world. Situated 300 kms southwest of Halifax, travel with our professional team in a twin turbine SK-76A++ helicopter. Flight time is an average of 1 hour 30 minutes from takeoff from our hangar located at the Halifax International airport to landing on Sable Island.

We offer many options to visit Sable Island by helicopter. All-inclusive organized day tours are available in partnership with Parks Canada Approved tour groups Kattuk Expeditions and Picture Perfect tours. (Links below)

  • Weather. NS weather is extremely unpredictable and therefore 2 days are allotted for travel, one as a weather back-up day. Plan for all weather scenarios once on the island, dress in layers.
  • Walking/Hiking. Walking on Sable Island is strenuous, be prepared to hike on the beach, over sand dunes, and on horse paths. Comfortable shoes covering your ankles are recommended.
  • Wildlife. The wildlife viewing on Sable Island is in its rawest form, untouched by humans. From horses, seals, and marine life to migratory birds, a good quality camera is essential to capture your day.

The ever-changing sandbar offers a different experience with every visit, making anytime of the year a unique experience.
